Tips for Cleaning your Window Coverings

SunGard Window Fashions • November 8, 2022

One of the biggest daily tasks we all deal with is cleaning. Whether that be bathrooms, kitchens, floors, or windows, it seems everything in our homes is in need of a good scrubbing. Despite this fact, many people often overlook cleaning what is covering their windows.

Your window treatments need cleaning just as much, if not more, than everything else in your home. Your treatments collect dirt and dust over time. If these sediments aren't removed, your window treatments look dingy and don't last as long. Cleaning your window treatments is essential and easier than you think.

To maintain the beauty of your Hunter Douglas window treatments, we recommend regular cleaning

We recommend regular cleaning to maintain the beauty of your window treatments. Cleaning keeps your window treatments looking good and helps them last longer. Cleaning does not have to take lots of time; you can do it with a few simple steps that are easily incorporated into your daily routine. Just dusting your window treatments every time you dust the rest of your house will go a long way to keeping your window treatments looking bright.

Dust Everything Often

Dusting is the most important part of cleaning your window coverings. The best way to dust is with a lint-free microfiber duster or damp cloth.

  • Loose dust and dirt can be removed with a wipe-down with a dry cloth or duster. If your window treatments do not have any built-up or stuck-on debris, this might be all you have to do.
  • To clean spots with stuck-on debris, dampen the area where you want to clean with water and then wipe down each piece of blinds, shades, or shutter with the wet cloth. Be careful not to use too much pressure when wiping; just rub gently so as not to tear any fibers away from their backing fabric (and thus make them more likely to break).

Regular dusting will make your window treatments look better, last longer, and make it much easier to clean them in general. But if you have some harder-to-clean spots, there are more options.

Use your Vacuum Cleaner

While it may not seem like it initially, your vacuum cleaner is one of the best ways to clean a window treatment quickly.

  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to quickly remove any loose dust or dirt.
  • Hold the vacuum cleaner nozzle close to the fabric, but not touching it. This will prevent damage to the fabric
  • Do not use your vacuum cleaner on delicate fabrics, as strong vacuums can easily damage these materials!

Your vacuum cleaner can be one of the easiest ways to clean your window treatments, both large and small messes.
